BSRM Steel Mills Ltd in Chattogram has been fined two lakh taka after inspectors found suspended particulate matter in its emissions exceeding legal limits. The Department of Environment ordered the company to pay within seven days and take immediate steps to curb pollution.
The Department of Environment has imposed an environmental compensation of two lakh taka on BSRM Steel Mills Limited in Chattogram after excessive levels of suspended particulate matter were detected in the factory’s emissions. Officials confirmed that the mill, located in the city’s Nasirabad industrial area, violated the Environmental Conservation Rules 2023 by releasing air pollutants above acceptable limits.
According to a notice signed on Thursday, December 4, by Sonia Sultana, director of the Department of Environment’s Chattogram Metropolitan Office, the penalty followed an on-site inspection conducted last Monday, December 1. During the visit, the factory was operating normally, and air samples were collected for laboratory analysis.

Tests carried out at the Chattogram research laboratory revealed that suspended particulate matter (SPM) levels were higher than the permissible thresholds set in national environmental regulations. Following a formal hearing, authorities decided to enforce the financial penalty on the company.
The order instructs BSRM Steel Mills to deposit the fine within seven days. The company has also been directed to take necessary measures to reduce smoke emissions and submit a written compliance report within the next fifteen working days.
