Green Earth launches nationwide tree plantation drive to tackle climate risks

Green Earth has launched a nationwide tree plantation campaign across Bangladesh to combat climate change impacts, restore ecological balance and raise environmental awareness through community participation and youth-led conservation efforts.

An environmental organisation in Bangladesh has launched a nationwide tree plantation campaign aimed at addressing the adverse impacts of climate change, protecting ecological balance and promoting a greener future for the country.

The programme, initiated by environmental group Green Earth, was formally inaugurated on Saturday in Tangail district as part of a coordinated effort spanning all 64 districts of Bangladesh.

The inauguration was led by Zakir Hossain, founding executive director of Buro Bangladesh and chief adviser to Green Earth.

The event was chaired and moderated by the organisation’s general secretary Shahid Mahmud. Among those present were Buro Bangladesh divisional manager Ishtiaq Ahmed, Green Earth president Dr Kayem Uddin, Shapla Universal Society executive director Amir Hossain Babu, UBINIG coordinator Robiul Islam Chunnu and Professor Syed Abdur Rahman, president of the Louhajang River Protection Committee.

Representatives from various social and environmental organisations, local administration officials and members of civil society also attended the programme.

Speakers at the event said Bangladesh is increasingly facing climate-related disasters including floods, droughts, severe heatwaves and irregular rainfall due to climate change. They stressed that large-scale tree plantation remains essential to tackling these challenges and said the Green Earth initiative could play a significant role in environmental protection efforts.

Organisers said the programme would focus not only on planting trees but also on ensuring the care and preservation of every sapling through local youth groups and volunteers.

Under the campaign, fruit-bearing, forest and medicinal trees along with species considered effective in reducing lightning-related risks will be planted across the country.

As part of efforts to raise environmental awareness, organisers will also distribute leaflets among school and college students and the general public and arrange community courtyard meetings.

Following the inauguration ceremony, guests planted trees in different areas of Tangail and distributed free fruit and medicinal saplings among local residents.

Organisers called on people across the country to support the campaign and contribute to making the programme successful.
